"Chilenización and La Chinita: The Regulation of Domestic Service in Chile, 1924-1952"

Following the exclusion of domestic servants from a number of provisions for labor workers, female domestic workers in Chile regularly petitioned the Labor Office, demanding payment of salaries and severance, as well as an end to employer abuses. Drawing on servant petitions, legal and social work studies, and newspaper, labor, and union records, Dr. Elizabeth Hutchison examines how female domestics and others understood their labor and their "rights"--as workers, as citizens, and as mothers.
